The Japan Foundation, Toronto and The Toronto Comic Arts Festival presents
Exhibition of Comics & Illustrations by Jane Mai & An Nguyen
The exhibition is in conjunction with the book launch of their book So Pretty / Very Rotten: Comics and Essays on Lolita Fashion and Culture by Jane Mai and An Nguyen, with additional materials by Novela Takemoto.
The exhibition will feature a number of works by An Nguyen and Jessica Mai that are featured in the book So Pretty / Very Rotten. In addition, there will be Lolita fashion on display as well as a photograph presentation.
In a series of essays and comics that are at once academic and intimate, cartoonists Jane Mai and An Nguyen delve into Lolita subculture and their relationship with it. Empowering and beautiful, but also inescapably linked to consumerism, the Rococo-inspired fashion is indulgent and sublime, pretty and rotten. The book is published by Koyama Press.
