Based on Fumiyo Kono’s award-winning manga, this heartbreaking tale follows a young girl named Suzu who, in 1944, moves to the small town of Kure to marry a young clerk from the local naval base. Through tough wartime conditions she cooks and cares for her family until the intense bombings finally reach Kure with devastating effect. Suzu’s life is shattered but through perseverance and courage she manages to continue to live life to the fullest.

This beautiful yet a tragic tale was the winner of the Hiroshima International Film Festival and Best Film at our Toronto Japanese Film festival 2017 and shows that even in the face of adversity and loss people could come together and rebuild their lives. An indelible, dream-like masterpiece.

Voiced by Rena Nōnen, Daisuke Ono, Yoshimasa Hosoya
