Fans Beyond Theatre Props

In the Japanese traditional performing arts fans are superbly made to a high standard of handcraftsmanship. They are so beautiful to simply look at. But when they appear in the performances, each type of theatrical art form from different eras, such as Noh or Kabuki, has unique, original use of fans. In each theatrical form the vocabulary of the expression is so rich. Some of the fans give a realistic, detailed description of unseen objects. Other fans invite images of characters or spirits The fans even transform the entire body of the performer.
