As classes continue to be held online at many educational institutions, we will hold a series of workshops where teachers can try out the free online resource “Hirogaru: Get more of Japan and Japanese.” Through using Hirogaru’s educational materials, teachers will have the opportunity to think about how to handle Japanese culture and circumstances in their own lessons, how the materials can be arranged, how it can fit the goals of their class, etc.

Show Let's get together! Japanese-Language Teachers in Canada (1) (November 26, 2020) As more and more programs are being conducted online there are increasing opportunities for those involved in Japanese-language education in Canada to gather and share information. There is great variety in the levels and areas being covered within Japanese-language education, however, and this gathering aims to target specific groups and themes to allow for deeper discussion of relevant topics. Show Trying out Free Online Resources: “Irodori”! (November 10, 17, 24, and December 1, 2020) As classes continue to be held online at many educational institutions, we will hold a series of workshops where teachers can try out the free online resource “Irodori: Japanese for Life in Japan.” Through analyzing Irodori’s educational materials, teachers will have the opportunity to think about how to use it in their own lessons, how the materials can be arranged, how it can fit the goals of their class, etc. Show Marugoto Teaching Material Project: Document Collection Presentation (August 29, 2020) The Marugoto Teaching Material Project aims to create a collection of materials to be used as a reference by teachers in order to make it easier for the Marugoto textbooks to be used in Japanese-language education in Canada. Our aim is that this “Reference Collection” will be useful in both synchronous and asynchronous online classes through bringing together useful digital resources, videos, etc. that can be used with the Marugoto textbooks. This project meeting will be a presentation of materials collected and/or created for use with the Marugoto Intermediate B1 textbook by the Canadian Japanese-language teachers who were members of the 1st Marugoto Teaching Materials Project. In order to make it easier to use Marugoto textbooks in Canadian Japanese-language education, we are planning a project to create a collection of materials to be used as a reference by teachers. Our aim is that this “Reference Collection” will be useful in both synchronous and asynchronous online classes through bringing together useful digital resources, videos, etc. that can be used with the Marugoto textbooks. On August 8 we will have a session to explain the outline of the project before we ask individuals to confirm their participation, so please feel free to join us if you are interested. Show JFT Japanese Language Courses Video Class Observation (June 20, 2020) In this workshop, we showcase videos taken during our year-long Japanese language courses. Through this recorded class observation, we hope that participating teachers have the chance to reflect on their own teaching and to share things they would like to implement in class and potential challenges that could arise. The session on February 27 will feature a talk by Mr. Matthew Russell from Oak Bay School, titled “Telling Stories to Teach Japanese (Japanese TPRS)” The second workshop in our series will help you learn to how to create your own website and promote yourself as a teacher. Show Online EdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers (January 8, 2020) The JFT Online EdCamp for Japanese Language Teachers is a study group where the participants play leading roles. Discussion topics are decided on by participants on the spot. Participants are welcome to suggest topics related to any problems they may have or something they want to hear others’ opinions on, etc. The goal is not to listen success stories, but for participants to work together to solve problems. Show Japanese Education and Social Media (September 20, 2019 - February 21, 2020) While most of us are often in contact with social media in our daily lives, it is not a stretch to assume there are those who rarely use it in their classrooms. This workshop will run the 3rd Friday of each month from September 20 to February 21 and introduce Social Media to those who are not yet familiar with it.
